This romantic necklace was designed by John Galliano for Christian Dior Boutique following the house’s extraordinary Spring 1998 Haute Couture collection. Staged on the grand staircase of Paris’s Opéra Garnier and inspired in part by the Marchesa Casati, the collection featured models wearing elaborate variations of pearl chokers and necklaces. This boutique piece translates that opulent runway jewellery into a particularly wearable design. The necklace is formed from three strands of creamy faux pearls designed to sit closely around the neck. Three substantial enamelled plaques punctuate the strands, each set into a chunky gold-tone frame and decorated with raised roses beneath a distinctive green-gold enamel finish. Each plaque is further bordered with a single row of matching pearls. The necklace fastens with an elaborate pearl-set double hook clasp, which catches onto an extension chain threaded with further pearls and allows the length to be adjusted. The chain terminates in an oval metal charm engraved “Christian Dior Boutique”. The necklace is in very good vintage condition overall; there is some plating loss to the gold wires separating the pearls on the extension chain but these are at the back of the necklace.
